Hollywood Residents Struggle as Homeless Encampments Keep Returning
Residents in Hollywood continue to express concerns about recurring homeless encampments. After a recent cleanup near Sunset Boulevard and Wilton Place, sidewalks and streets briefly looked clear.
Yet, neighbors say they already expect the tents to return soon. The repeated cycle of removal and reappearance has left the community frustrated and uneasy.
Frustration from Residents
Long-time resident Keith Johnson has spoken out repeatedly. He said that calls to council offices rarely lead to lasting change. Johnson explained, “It gets cleared, comes back, and sometimes grows even bigger.”
His photos show sidewalks blocked by tents, leaving children no choice but to walk around them to reach nearby schools. As a result, families worry about both safety and accessibility.

Community and Church Concerns
Volunteers at a local church on Wilton Place also shared their experiences. The Aguilar family has often dealt with disruptive behavior from unhoused individuals. “They break windows. They urinate. They throw trash everywhere,” said 15-year-old Alexander Aguilar.
According to volunteers, these problems make it harder to keep church grounds safe and welcoming. Health risks and damaged property remain constant issues.
Safety Risks from Fires
Residents recall multiple fires associated with refugee camps several blocks away, around Hollywood Boulevard and Wilton Place. Last year, city crews cleared the area before the annual CicLAvia cycling event.
Yet, the encampments reappeared soon after. Johnson said, “It’s only a matter of time before they’re back.” Because of the fires and debris, many locals feel their neighborhood faces growing safety threats.
Disagreement Over Numbers
City leaders have claimed that homelessness numbers are dropping. However, residents argue that their streets tell a different story. Johnson noted, “The mayor says numbers are down, yet it still affects our community and businesses.”
Many residents insist that visible conditions show little improvement. They want stronger measures that protect families while also addressing the needs of unhoused people.
Waiting on Official Response

Council member Hugo Soto-Martinez represents the district. His office has been contacted, but residents say they still wait for clear answers. Calls for consistent enforcement and long-term planning continue to grow. Until leaders provide durable strategies, locals believe the pattern of clearings and returns will not stop.
Hollywood residents continue pushing for action. While cleanups offer temporary respite, long-term development is still elusive. Families, businesses, and community groups want safe streets and healthier solutions for everyone. Until meaningful changes arrive, many expect the same cycle to keep repeating, leaving frustrations high and hopes unsettled.
